Thinking about studying overseas?

Then think about studying in Canada. Consider these advantages:

Canada has some of the highest ranked universities in the world.
A Canadian degree from a good university will more likely be recognized by businesses in Canada and the United States than from universities outside of North America.
Canadian tuition fees are likely to be much lower than tuition fees in the United States.
You may be eligible for a work permit to allow you to legally work in Canada while you are studying and after you graduate (see " Want to work while you study " section).
A person with post-secondary education from a Canadian university or college, will likely have a better chance of being eligible to immigrate permanently to Canada compared to those who obtained their degree from another country.
Compared to countries such as the United States, Australia, and United Kingdom, many students find Canadian immigration policies to be much more favourable and welcoming.

Want to work while you study?

If you are studying at a public university in Canada, you may qualify for a work permit which will allow you to legally work while you are studying in Canada.

Why should you obtain a work permit? Consider the following:

Many employers require that you be legally able to work before they will consider hiring you.
If you don’t have a legal work permit, you may be pressured by your employer to work with sub-standard work conditions and wages.
If you don’t have a valid work permit and you are caught working illegally, you may lose your legal status in Canada and be forced to leave. You may also be barred from re-entering Canada for a length of time.
Your work permit will allow you to legally stay in Canada for a specified length of time. If you obtain a work permit after you finished studying, you will be allowed to legally remain in Canada after completing your studies.

Want to get your permanent residence status?

Smart thinking! Permanent residence status is a natural goal for anyone who wants to remain in Canada for an extended period of time. The benefits of permanent residence status are numerous. Consider the following:

Permanent residence status (“PR”) will allow you to stay indefinitely in Canada without having to apply for any further visas or permits.
You can apply for PR for you, your spouse (or common-law partner) and your dependant children at the same time based on your qualifications.
After you obtain your PR, you can also apply for your parents or grandparents to join you and obtain their PR.
After you obtain your PR, you can work for virtually any employer in Canada without having to apply for a work permit first.
After you obtain your PR, you will no longer have to pay international tuition fees.
After you obtain your PR, you are eligible for healthcare paid for by the Canadian government.
After you obtain your PR, you can be eligible to become a Canadian citizen after remaining in Canada 3 out of 4 years.

You may be eligible for permanent residence right now. However, one of the main disadvantages of the Canadian immigration system is the processing time. Applications for permanent residence can take anywhere from a few months to several years to be approved, depending on the type of application and the visa post which processes the application.
