Dependant Child Definition to Change

Citizenship and Immigration Canada will be changing the definition of dependant children for immigration applications this Friday, August 1, 2014.  All applications submitted after this date for temporary and permanent residence will be affected.

Here is the new definition of a dependant child:

  1. A child who is under the age of 19 (previously it was 22).  In other words, your children will stop being your dependant children on their 19th birthday; and
  2. A child who is mentally or physically disabled and has depended on the parents for financial support since before his/her 19th birthday.

Please note: Exceptions will no longer be made for children who are students.

If you have a child who is close to the age of 19, it is imperative that you submit your application before his/her 19th birthday to ensure that he/she will be counted as your dependant child.
