New Immigration Programs for Ukrainians

IRCC announced that they will be providing new programs in support of Ukrainians who are fleeing the war. The exact program details have yet been released but we can anticipate the following:

1)   A new program for temporary entry. The Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel will replace the need to obtain a normal visitor visa to enter Canada. Those on this authorization will be able extend their stay stay for at least two years. Background checks and security screening will still be required. There is no limit to the number of individuals that can apply through this path.

2)  A new family reunification sponsorship pathway. This will allow immediate and extended family members to be sponsored and obtain permanent residence. The number of applicants, and which family members will qualify, has not yet been announced.

3) Open work permits. Ukrainian citizens who come to Canada will be eligible for open work permits. Additionally, any Ukrainian citizen currently in Canada as a visitor, worker or student will also be able to obtain an open work permit.

It is expected that the details of these programs will be announced in the next few weeks. Once the details are announced, we will organize a webinar and consultations to go over the details and assess eligibility. Until then, those fleeing can still apply for expedited processing through the regular immigration routes.
