New Pathways for Hong Kong Residents to Immigrate to Canada

The Minister has just announced some exciting new provisions to help Hong Kong residents immigrate to Canada.  While further details will soon be announced, here are some of the main points so far:

Young HK residents may soon be able to apply for an open work permit of 3 years if they have completed a post-secondary program in Canada or abroad.  Spouses and children would also be able to accompany them.

• There will be a new permanent residence pathway in 2021 for HK residents who have completed a year of work experience in Canada.

• HK residents who have completed a post-secondary program in Canada may also have a direct pathway to permanent residence in 2021.

• Processing fees for visitor extensions will be waived for HK residents.

• An exemption to the 12 month bar for Pre-Removal Risk Assessments (PRRA) will be granted to those who had made failed refugee claims.
