The government has announced that parental sponsorships will open again on January 4, 2016. There will also be a quota again this year. Here are some things to keep in mind if you plan on sponsoring your parents or grandparents:
- A quota means that your window of opportunity to apply is very limited. Last year, 5000 spots were filled in a matter of days. If you would like to apply, you should have your application ready to submit by January 4.
- In order to qualify, a sponsor needs to show that they have the requisite income for the past three years.
- The definition of a dependant child was changed in 2013. A dependant child is now defined as a child under the age of 19 or someone who is financially dependant upon the parent due to disability.
- CIC is very specific with regard to the documentation that is required. If you’re missing a document or your forms are missing a detail, your application would be returned and you would lose your place in line.
If you wish to sponsor your parents (and siblings who are dependents in the same application), we must evaluate and start preparing the application immediately.
