What to do with Immigration when you Graduate

Another school year is rapidly coming to an end. Here are some important tips for international students who are in their final semester of studies:

  • Study permits allow students studying full-time to work off-campus part-time (up to 20 hours/week) during the school year and full-time during any regularly scheduled breaks. The period of time after finishing classes and exams and before receiving written communication of having completed your program is NOT a scheduled break. During this period students are only permitted to work up to 20 hours per week.
  • Once a student receives any written confirmation (ex. letter from the school, final transcripts etc.) that the program of study is completed, they cannot work based on the study permit.
  • Students may be able to work, however, after submitting the application for their post-graduation work permit (without having received the actual work permit yet).
  • IRCC has recently announced that international students in Canada who are taking courses online due to COVID-19, will not have their eligibility for a post-graduation work permit affected.
  • Students are only eligible for a post-graduation work permit once. It is important to ensure that the length of the work permit and the job offers allow for permanent residence.
