The Minister of Immigration has recently announced a number of changes to the international student program. These changes will impact how much funding you need to have to come to Canada, how many hours you can work off-campus as a student, and who is eligible for a Post Graduate Work Permit. Here are some of the main changes
1. Funds for Studying in Canada
As of January 1, 2024, students applying to study in Canada must show that they have at least the following funds:
- $20,635 in liquid funds available for living expenses for a single applicant;
- The full cost of first year tuition fees, and;
- Enough fees for their travel expenses.
2. Working Off Campus
If you hold or applied for a study permit before December 7, 2023, then you are allowed to work more than 20 hours off-campus until April 30, 2024.
3. Remote Studying
If you complete a program that includes online studies outside of Canada, you can use this program to count towards the length of your PGWP as long as:
- You started the program before September 1, 2024;
- The remote studies comprised less than 50% of the time; and
- The program meets all other PGWP requirements.
4. PGWP Public Policy Will Not Be Extended in 2024
IRCC announced that there will be no further extensions of the public policy for Post Graduate Work Permit holders. The current public policy to offer an 18-month extension on expiring PGWPs will end on December 31, 2023 and will not be renewed.
